Then Swänska Argus hade genom sin stora spridning och ett modernt språk en stor betydelse för det svenska språkets utveckling. I tidskriften användes ett enklare språk än vad som för tiden var brukligt. Till exempel skrev man “bygga” istället för “byggia” och “kyrka” istället för “kyrkhia”.
På 1700-talet lever Bellman och hans dryckesvisor upp, med sin lätt svarta humor och dess komiska figurer som än idag är uppskattade. Bellmans improvisationsförmåga var stor och redan under hans levnadstid skapades Bellmanhistorierna som ofta byggde på hans påstådda respektlöshet gentemot överheten.
Det sägs att Göteborgshumorn uppstod på 1800-talet och att Kung Oscar II:s hovfotograf, Aron Jonason, är en av grundarna till traditionen med ordlekar. Jonason ska en kväll ha fotograferat mycket och använt en magnesiumblixt, varvid Kungen utbrister “Det var väldigt vad Jonason blixtrar mycket!”. Jonason och replikerade då “Ja, blixtrar den ene så åskar den andre”. Ofta har Kal å Ada huvudrollerna i dessa historier, ibland också Beda och Osborn. Göteborgshumorn visar sig också i smeknamnen på stadens byggnader och platser. Vattenspelet vid Götaplatsen kallas för Bussbidén och platsen där Göteborgshjulet stod för Hjultomten.
Under 1800-talet bildades vid Uppsala universitet en grupp som skulle bli Juvenalerna, vilka underhöll med spexiga visor. Ur detta utvecklades sångcykeln Gluntarne och flera av Sveriges komiker har senare kommit ifrån samma typ av studentikosa humor. Blandaren började ges ut år 1863 av studenter vid Teknologiska Institutet i Stockholm.
